The neodymium-gallium system

  • 1. Ben-Gurion Univ. of the Negev, Beersheba (Israel)

Description

The binary phase diagram of the neodymium-gallium system has been investigated by differential thermal analysis (DTA), X-ray diffraction and metallography. Four intermetallic compounds were identified: Nd3Ga, Nd5Ga3, NdGa and NdGa2. The DTA results indicate the possible existence of two intermetallic compounds, unidentified as yet, on the gallium-rich side. NdGa2 melts congruently at a temperature of 14880C and the other compounds form peritectically. Two eutectic reactions were found in this system: one at 6510C on the neodymium-rich side and a second at 300C on the gallium-rich side. The allotropic transition of neodymium is lowered from 8670C to 8130C when more than 1 at.% gallium is added. The structure of Nd3Ga was found to be of the cubic Cu3Au type and the lattice parameter was found to be a=4.676+-0.008 A. (Auth.)
