Preliminary evaluation of improved LWR fuels using onion effect

  • 1. Central Research Inst. of Electric Power Industry, Komae, Tokyo (Japan). Komae Research Lab.

Description

Some types of modified fuel rods which use onion effect of plutonium and product more plutonium in fuel rods than present types have been designed. Onion effect is calculated with ROLAIDS, and modified fuel burn-up effect is calculated with ANISN-BURN preliminaly. Central-scatter fuel rods which contain neutron scatter such as MgO in center of fuel pellets and cylindrical fuel rods increase epi-thermal absorption cross section of U238 by 6 % and 18 % respectively. These modifed fuel rods increase fuel rod reactivity after burn-up of 40 GWD/T.At 60 GWD/T central-scatter fuel rods and cylindrical fuel rods increase fuel rod reactivity by 0.5 % Δk/k and 1.5 % Δk/k respectively.
