Description
We provide here by using U LIII EXAFS and U MIV HERFD-XANES spectroscopies the experimental proof that La(III) for U(IV) substitution in UO2 proceeds not through the creation of O vacancies (as has often been assumed), but by the oxidation of U(IV) to U(V) in proportions equimolar to the substituted trivalent lanthanum.
