Earthquake resistant design of Calder Hall improved type nuclear power station in Tokai-mura, (3). Aseismic studies of earthquake resistant problems

What appears in this paper (3) is a report on the studies made of the earthquake resistant design of the Calder Hall Improved Type Nuclear Power Station at Tokai-mura, and is a series of previous papers (1) and (2) dealing with the conditions of aseismic design and the earthquake resistant design. In paper (3) descriptions are given of the experimental studies and theoretical analysis of the aseismic design, especially concerning the reactor core structure and the reactor pressure vessel and its supporting structure. In the reactor core structure, the largest stresses applied to the core graphite blocks during earthquake motion were examined by the vibration test for the purpose of studying dynamic behavior of the core structure, and were compared with the destructive stress obtained by the strength test of the blocks. In the reactor vessel structure, the peak stress figures of the junction between the vessel and its supporting structure were found out theoretically, and moreover, were checked experimentally by photo-elastic test and yielding test. The studies were undertaken in close cooperation between the Aseismic Design Study Committee formed by the Japan Atomic Power Company and the Design Section of The General Electric Company of the United Kingdom.
