The effect of gravity on steam propagation in porous media

Description

Theoretical and experimental studies of steam flow and condensation in porous media are presented. The influence of gravity forces on the liquid phase distribution, condensation front propagation velocity, temperature profile, and pressure gradients is examined. Theoretical calculations predict an abrupt transition from a viscous dominated flow regime to a gravity dominated flow regime for ratios of gravity forces to viscous forces exceeding one. Experimental observations confirm this transition. Temperature profiles, pressure profiles, condensation front velocities, and liquid distributions are in agreement with theory. Stability criterion for stable displacement of water by steam are experimentally confirmed
