The Rum Jungle project

The Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments are currently, through the mechanism of a National Partnership Agreement (NPA), undertaking and/or planning a range of studies and other activities on the former Rum Jungle Mine Site. This NPA is scheduled for completion on 30th June 2013. The purpose of these studies is to inform and assist in the development of a new management and rehabilitation plan consistent with the interests of stakeholders, particularly the traditional Aboriginal owners of the site. Although at completion of the 1980s works the rehabilitation objectives were deemed to have been achieved, more recent studies have documented the gradual deterioration of the original rehabilitation works (Taylor et al 2003). In light of this and given advances in best practice standards in mine closure and rehabilitation, the Northern Territory and Commonwealth Governments recognised a need to develop an improved rehabilitation strategy for the site.
