Determination of D-meson lifetimes

Creators

  • 1. Rutherford Appleton Lab.

Description

D-meson lifetimes are determined from decays observed in an exposure of the high resolution hydrogen bubble chamber LEBC in association with the European Hybrid Spectrometer to incident 360 GeV π/sup -/ and 400 GeV proton beams. Various techniques for lifetime determination using unfitted decays are compared on the basis of the π- data. A new model independent analysis based on the distribution of transverse decay length is introduced. Best values for the lifetimes using the full data set are found to be; tau(D/sup 0/) = 4.3/sub -0.4//sup +0.5/ x 10/sup -13/s tau(D/sup +/) = 10.6/sub -0.9//sup +1.2/ x 10/sup -13/s
