Method for increasing the detection and luminescence efficiency of crystalline materials for low-energy β radiation and electron detectors

Description

A method is suggested for increasing the detection and luminescence efficiency of crystalline materials for low-energy β radiation and electron detectors based on cerium-activated Y-Al garnet or perovskite. A crucial operation in the fabrication of such materials consists in etching off the undefined surface layer formed during the working, the surface quality being of prime importance for detectors of energies up to 100 keV. In the method in question, 65-85% phosphoric acid is used for this purpose instead of the conventional 10% NaOH solution. At a temperature T (in degC) within the region of 50-295 degC, the acid is allowed to act on the surface for t = 90,000/T - 300 sec. (P.A.)
