Superplastic characterization of 1420 and 1421

Description
A comparative study of superplasticity has been performed on two Al-Li alloys, 1420 (Al-Li-Mg-Zr) and 1421 (Al-Li-Mg-Zr-Sc). For the as-received 1421, superplastic elongations were attained with a maximum elongation of 675 percent. However, less than 170 percent elongation has been observed for the alloy 1420. The addition of Sc (0.16 to 0.21 percent) in the alloy 1421 appears to be responsible for the enhanced superplastic elongation. 6 refs
