Description
A Nd12.6Fe69.3Co11.6Zr0.5B6/α-Fe nanocomposite alloy prepared by high energy ball milling was investigated by Moessbauer spectrometry. The analysis of the unoxidized powder revealed that Co is present in both hard and soft phases. The oxidation process of the nanocomposite at 250 and 300 C was investigated and compared to that of the pure Nd2Fe14B phase. It appeared that the Nd2(Fe,Co,Zr)14B phase dissociates first, being less corrosion resistant than α-Fe(Co). The dissociation products are the same as for pure Nd2Fe14B. A slowering of the dissociation process, compared to pure Nd2Fe14B, was evidenced, and interpreted in relation with the microstructure of the powder. The powder being constituted of aggregates of Nd2(Fe,Co,Zr)14B and α-Fe(Co) nanograins, the slowering of the dissociation process suggests that the α-Fe(Co) phase acts as a protective layer for the Nd2(Fe,Co,Zr)14B nanograins within the aggregates.
