  • 1. Ajou University College of Medicine, Suwon (Korea, Republic of)

Description

The purpose of this study were to describe the ultrasonographic features of placental polyp and to determine the diagnostic role of ultrasonography. The clinical findings and the findings of transvaginal sonography and sonohysterography in 5 patients with pathologically proved placental polyp were reviewed retrospectively One patient had a history of delivery 18 months ago and four patients underwent abortion 2∼4 months ago. In all cases, pregnancy tests were negative. Serum HCG was elevated in 4 cases. At sonography, the lesion was either multiple small pedunculated endometrial mass with irregular margin(n=2) or a single large in homogenous echoic mass within the uterine cavity invading the myometrium(n=3). The lesion involved the uterine fundus and corpus. These findings suggest that differentiation of placental polyp from intrauterine mass, such as an endometrial polyp, degenerated submucosal myoma and trophoblastic tumors, may be possible with the help of both transvaginal sonography and sonohysterography
