Air pollution assessment in two Moroccan cities using instrumental neutron activation analysis on bio-accumulators

Full text: Biomonitoring is an appropriate tool for the air pollution assessment studies. In this work, lichens and barks have been used as bio-accumulators in several sites in two Moroccan cities (Rabat and Mohammadia). The specific ability of absorbing and accumulating heavy metals and toxic element from the air, their longevity and resistance to the environmental stresses, make those bioindicators suitable for this kind of studies. The Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) is universally accepted as one of the most reliable analytical tools for trace and ultra-trace elements determination. Its use in trace elements atmospheric pollution related studies has been and is still extensive as can be demonstrated by several specific works and detailed reviews. In this work, a preliminary investigation employing lichens, barks and instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) was carried out to evaluate the trace elements distribution in six different areas of Rabat and Mohammadia cities characterised by the presence of many industries and heavy traffic. Samples were irradiated with thermal neutrons in a nuclear reactor and the induced activity was counted using high-resolution Germanium-Lithium detectors. More than 30 elements were determined using two modes : short irradiation (1 minute) and long irradiation (17 hours). Accuracy and quality control were assessed using the reference standard material IAEA-336. This was less than 1% for major and about 5 to 10% for traces.

Texte integrale: La biosurveillance est un outil approprie pour les etudes d evaluation de la pollution atmospherique. Dans ce travail, les lichens et les ecorces ont ete utilises comme bio-accumulateurs dans plusieurs sites dans deux villes marocaines (Rabat et Mohammadia). La capacite specifique d absorption et d accumulation de metaux lourds et d elements toxiques dans l air, leur longevite et leur resistance aux efforts environnementaux, rendent ces bio-indicateurs appropries pour ce genre d etudes. L analyse par activation neutronique instrumentale (INAA) est universellement reconnue comme l' un des outils les plus fiables d analyse des traces et ultra-traces de determination des elements. Son utilisation dans des etudes reliees a la pollution atmospherique d'oligoelements a ete et est encore importante comme peut etre demontre par plusieurs travaux specifiques et revues detaillees. Dans ce travail, une enquete preliminaire employant les lichens, les ecorces et l'analyse instrumentale par activation neutronique (INAA) a ete realisee pour evaluer la distribution d'oligoelements dans six differents secteurs des villes de Rabat et de Mohammadia caracterisees par la presence de nombreuses industries et le trafic lourd. Les echantillons ont ete irradies par des neutrons thermiques dans un reacteur nucleaire et de l'activite induite a ete compte a haute resolution des detecteurs Germanium-Lithium. Plus de 30 elements ont ete determines en utilisant deux modes: l'irradiation courte (1 minute) et l'irradiation longue (17 heures). La Precision et le controle de qualite ont ete evalues en utilisant le materiel standard AIEA-336 de reference. Cela a ete moins de 1% pour les grands et environ 5 a 10% pour les traces.
