Nanosecond two-dimensional imaging using tomographic techniques

  • 1. Lawrence Livermore National Lab., CA (USA)

Description

The streak camera system yields small, two-dimensional images with limited spatial resolution (≤ 150 spatial points) and ≤ 0.5 nsec exposure are used for obtaining time-resolved, tomographically reconstructed, two-dimensional images of electron and x-ray beams. System components and experimental layout are described in view of two tomographic techniques relating to relativistic electron-beams and high-intensity x-ray beams. A sequential series of time-resolved, tomographic, two-dimensional images of a nanosecond electron beam are obtained using 3 linear fiber optic arrays of 30 and 60 fibers each positioned around the e-beam axis at 00, 610, and 1170. The light produced by the beam interacting with nitrogen was focused onto the optical fiber arrays, transmitted to a streak camera and recorded on a solid-state camera or film. A sequence of time-resolved tomographic, two-dimensional images were obtained for a high-intensity nanosecond x-ray pulse. The x-rays were imaged through four slits onto a scintillator and the light produced in the fluor was then examined. The image projections were recorded with streak cameras on solid-state imaging arrays and the digital data stored in large memories. The image size and shape agreed with calculations; x-ray diode measurements verified the image energy
