The temperature dependence of the electric quadrupole interaction for 111Cd in the semiconductor tellurium

Description
Using the TDPAC-method with the probe nucleus 111Cd the quadrupole interaction for 111CdTe has been investigated over the temperature range 77 K <= T <= 655 K. The samples were prepared by ion implantation. In contrast to most of the metals, the quadrupole frequency νQ increases with increasing temperature over the whole temperature range investigated. Tellurium is a semiconductor with a relatively small energy gap of 0.33 eV. Therefore the charge carrier density is considerably changed as a function of temperature. This might be an explanation for the unusual temperature dependence of the quadrupole frequency νQ in the semiconductor tellurium. (orig.)
