Microstructure and phase composition of the niobium-zirconium-carbon alloy system

Description

Structure and phase composition of two groups of alloys in the system Nb-Cr-C are investigated. The first alloy group contains 0.12+-0.03 mass% carbon, 0.9-2.2 mass% zirconium; the second, 0.23+-0.03 mass% carbon, 1.0-3.4 mass% zirconium. The alloy phase compositions are studied using microstructural analysis and also X-ray structural phase analysis of electrochemical deposits. The phase percentages are controlled by zirconium and carbon concentration, and alloy condition. In cast alloys, an increase in zirconium concentration (at the same carbon concentration) results in an increasing amount of the phase (Nb,Zr)C and coarsening of its precipitates. Meanwhile, the amount of the phase Nb2C is reduced. Depletion in Nb2C occurs during working and heat treatment
