Identification of clear taenite in meteorites as ordered FeNi

Description
Studies are reported on meteoritic metal with reflected-light microscopy and electron-probe analysis, in which it has been discovered that clear taenite is optically anisotropic and that it is in all meteorite groups. It is concluded that clear taenite is the ordered, tetragonal FeNi phase found by Alberston et al (Nature 273: 453 (1978) and Phys. Scr.; 17: 467 (1978)) in two iron meteorites using Moessbauer and X-ray techniques, and that it formed from taenite, not kamacite. This tetragonal phase has been synthesised by irradiating FeNi alloys with neutrons or electrons below 593 K. (UK)
