Breakup cross sections of cosmic rays with nuclei in interstellar helium, in air and in detector materials

Description
We have constructed semiempirical equations for calculating the total inelastic cross sections in nucleus-nucleus (N-N) collisions. To a first approximation, the magnitudes of partial breakup cross sections (for products heavier than hydrogen) are proportional to those of the corresponding proton-nucleus (p-N) interactions. However, the proportionality factor is different from the ratio of total inelastic cross sections: nuclei like C and O more frequently undergo complete breakup in collisions with complex nuclei than with protons. Abstract (German)
Es wurden halbempirische Gleichungen zur Berechnung der totalen unelastischen Wirkungsquerschnitte bei Kern-Kern-(N-N) Kollisionen aufgestellt. In erster Naeherung ist der Wert der partiellen Breakup-Querschnitte (fuer Reaktionsprodukte schwerer als Wasserstoff) proportional zu dem fuer die entsprechenden Proton-Kern-(p-N)-Wechselwirkungen. Der Proportionalitaetsfaktor ist jedoch verschieden vom Verhaeltnis der totalen unelastischen Wirkungsquerschnitte: Kerne wie C und O brechen bei Reaktionen mit komplexen Kernen haeufiger vollstaendig auseinander als bei solchen mit Protonen.
