Energy problems and the role of nuclear power in Brazil

The effect of oil crisis also existed in Brazil; 42% of primary energy is supplied by petroleum, of which 78% is imported. Under such situation, efforts are made to exploit domestic oil resources and save energy. As compared with some countries in the world, however, Brazil is relatively blessed with energy resources such as petroleum, coal and uranium, as well as hydraulic power for future development. Still, Brazil is tackling strenuously with nuclear power development. In the year 2010, 30 years hence, it is planned to supply about 36% of the electric power with nuclear energy. Further, by the turn of the century, the domestic production of nuclear power plants and the establishment of the nuclear fuel cycle will be attained. (J.P.N.)
