Description

Experimental conditions have been developed, which allow internal friction measurements in reactor pressure vessel steels. The damping is due to the movement of screw dislocations, as deduced from transmission electron microscopy observations. This paper shows how their interactions with different obstacles (Peierls valleys, impurities and precipitates) can explain the brittle-to-ductile transition and the irradiation embrittlement of commercial ferritic steels.
