Automatic title indexing

The bibliographic index is a descriptive bulletin which strives to bring together, for the use of engineers and technicians, the main documentary references collected in scientific literature in all its forms: books, conference proceedings, translations, patents, reports laboratory and publications, periodicals). Composed on an electronic computer, it essentially comprises three parts: an index - alphabetical subjects, an index - authors and a list of bibliographical references in their original language. The subject index uses a formula similar to that of the indexed KWIC (Keyword in Context Index for Technical Literature). It is obtained by permutation of the significant terms coming, on the one hand, from the titles of documents, on the other hand, from complementary expressions added each time a precision can be brought. This report describes the method and the programs used for compiling a subject index on an IBM 7094 computer, which is faster than the IBM 1401, but which has the major drawback of only allowing word-for-word work, whereas IBM 1401 and IBM 360 allow character-to-character processing
