Determination of attenuation coefficient value of low carbon steel resulting from 1.2 mBar pressure nitridation and sputtering

Description

In the world of the radiography industry, every radiation worker always has the risk of radiation exposure. One way to reduce this exposure is radiation shielding or shielding. However, shielding for radiation requires a material with a high atomic number, lead (Pb) material that has these criteria, but this material is expensive and its use is limited or difficult to obtain. So in this study utilising materials that are widely produced and not too expensive, namely steel materials including the most widely used types of materials. Steel materials are widely used for industrial purposes because they are easy to find and relatively cheap, these materials have malleable properties so they are used by industry as raw materials. This study determines the value of the attenuation coefficient on low carbon steel that has undergone plasma nitriding and DC sputtering processes. Plasma nitriding was carried out for a time variation of 1 hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, 4 hours, and 5 hours with a pressure of 1.2 mbar and a temperature of 4000C, DC sputtering process using 100 % lead (Pb) target material with a voltage of 5 kV, a current of 10 mA, and a time of 40 minutes after which testing was carried out to determine the value of the attenuation coefficient using a geiger muller co-60 with a voltage of 850 HV with a time of 60 seconds for each chop followed by XRF testing. The results showed an increase in the value of the attenuation coefficient in the nitrided raw material sample by 27.40 % (0.1019/mm to 0.1299/mm) and 36.12 % (0.1019/mm to 0.1388/mm). (author)
