Type-testing: the German approach to qualifying safety critical software
Description
Qualifying safety-related software to the satisfaction of regulators has been a problem for the nuclear industry worldwide. In Germany the approach of type-setting hardware, independent of a particular plant application, is well proven. The concept is now being extended to computer-based safety systems, which it is planned to backfit to existing reactors. So far the response from the safety authorities has been encouraging. (Author)
