Modular properties of scalar field theories in three dimensions
Description
We examine the ''modular'' invariant proposed by Cardy on the spacetime S1xS2. For a free massless scalar field, it is shown that the invariant can be considered as the zero-point energy on a definite torus S1xS1, or the free energy on the spacetime R1xS1xS1 up to an overall factor. The exchange of the two cycles of the torus assures the ''modular'' invariance
