Mechanism of interaction between EMF and living cells

Description

The mechanism of electromagnetic field (EMF) interference with information transfer was studied and the effects of EMF on biological signal transfer that are susceptible to mathematical representation were identified. All cellular functions are controlled by extracellular and intracellular communications called signaling. The degree to which these processes can be influenced by EMF was the focus of this study. General public concern about possible health risks associated with exposure to EMF has resulted in an increased number of projects studying the biological effects of low frequency and high frequency electric and magnetic fields. The major stages of this project included: (1) a critical review of the literature, (2) a delineation of the physiological system, (3) a mathematical representation, (4) a solution of the model, and (5) a discussion and evaluation of the results. The study has shown that the electric field directly (and the magnetic field implicitly via induced electric currents) affects the ion fluxes in the extracellular medium. The total magnitude of this effect is not known. 362 refs., 29 figs
