An α-ray image of the imaging plate discriminated from γ-ray and an LET effect on heavy ion irradiations

Description
We have reported that the imaging plate (Fuji Photo Film Co. Ltd. type BAS3000-UR, abbreviated to IP hereafter) shows the different excitation spectra when they are irradiated with various radiations and the reason turned out to be responsible for the range of radiations. Due to the blue dye, which is mixed to improve the space resolution of IP, the effective readout depth of IP varies with the wavelength of a excitation light. With taking account of the ratio of the PSL (photo stimulated luminescence) intensity excited with a 600 nm light to the one with 500 nm we are able to obtain a discriminated image from mixed radiations. We named the method two wavelength readout method. Commercial instruments read out the IP only with a 633 nm light. It can not demonstrate the method. Then, we constructed a prototype apparatus to show the capability. Furthermore, we have continued to investigate whether the IP have LET effects on irradiations with heavy ion beams or not. We constructed a simple readout apparatus and irradiated the IP with high LET beams at TIARA (Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application, Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute). With eliminating the dye effect, the LET effects were found. (author)
