Estimate of the amount, composition and dynamics of the discharge of radioactive substances from the damaged reactor

Creators

Description

The total release of radioactive substances (not including radioactive noble gases) from the damaged Chernobylsk-4 reactor was estimated at 50 MCi, which means approximately 3-4% of the total activity of the fission products in the reactor on 6 May 1986. The composition of radionuclides in the discharge was deduced from radiometric investigations of aerosol samples and soil specimens and was notable for its high content of volatile iodine and tellurium. Quantitative information concerning the radiation in the power of the discharge with time and the composition of the radionuclides released is given
