Air-water hydraulics modeling for a Mark-22 fuel assembly with RELAP5

Description
The RELAP5/MOD2.5 computer program is being used to simulate hypothetical loss-of-coolant accidents in the SRS production reactors. Because of their unique geometry and thermal-hydraulic design these reactors pose a significant challenge to the simulation capability of RELAP5. This paper focuses on one aspect of the LOCA simulations, air-water flow through the fuel assemblies. Deficiencies in the RELAP5 treatment of wall friction and interfacial friction are described along with proposals to extend these models to encompass the Savannah River Site reactor fuel assembly hydraulics. A modeling technique to allow RELAP5 to reproduce experimentally observed weir flow at the fuel assembly inlet is also described
