Relationship between structure and reactivity in AOT inverse micelles

Description

As inverse micelles can be considered as chemical micro-reactors, the objective of this research thesis is to show that reaction rates can be modified, either by varying the size of micro-reactors, or by modifying the location of one of the reactants. After a brief overview of noticeable results obtained on AOT inverse micelles about the structure and reactivity, the author reports the study of structural modifications induced by an addition of small molecules or proteins. Two complementary models are proposed on this purpose: a geometrical model which reports the medium microscopic evolution and a kinetic model which could report the system microscopic evolution as well reactivity changes with respect to probe location. The next part reports the study of in situ synthesis of semi-conductor particles in AOT inverse micelles. The author then reports that a surprising aspect of macromolecule solubilization has been noticed: the solubilization of a polypeptide, gelatine, allows the whole system to be gelled whereas gelatine is essentially polar

Abstract (French)

Les micelles inverses d'AOT sont des microemulsions eau dans huile, dont la taille est entierement controlee par la quantite d'eau solubilisee. L'incorporation en micelles, de petites molecules, aussi bien que de petites proteines hydrosolubles, entraine des perturbations dans la structure et la reactivite du systeme. Un modele de localisation des reactifs en micelles inverses d'AOT est alors propose, a partir de mesures structurales et cinetiques. La synthese in situ de semi-conducteurs dans ces microemulsions est exposee. La taille des colloides formes depend etroitement de celles des micelles. La reactivite de ces semi-conducteurs est alors modifiee selon les conditions de taille et de synthese, et une forte augmentation du rendement de photoreduction du methylviologene peut alors etre observee. La solubilisation de gelatine dans le milieu micellaire, permet sous certaines conditions, de solidifier l'ensemble de la solution. Le gel ainsi obtenu apparait comme un systeme de micelles interconnectees par des brins de gelatine en helice. La presence de 'poche' d'eau libre dans le milieu permet d'y entreprendre des reactions de phototransfert impliquant des semi-conducteurs colloidaux tel que le CdS. (auteur)
