Technics of quantitative boron-coating for radiation detectors

Description

Two economic and practical technics of quantitative boron-coating for radiation detectors which named dip-coated boron deposition (DCBD) and hand-painted boron deposition (HPBD) were presented, and the concrete steps are detailed. After been wrapped by tubes with different thickness and exposed by standard Am-Be neutron source, response of neutron count rate of a boron-lined proportional counter (BLPC) in which the boron film are painted by this way are measured. Minimum of resin-boron ratio (λ) in DCBD is 5.0, while the best value in HPBD is 0.2. The best method is that mixture be dropped on the coated surface firstly, then print boron powder by hand. DCBD have merits of uniform and firm boron film, and unlimited to coated surface, but it will lower the detection efficiency because of a big value of 'λ'. Test numbers of DCBD should be determined by experiments and experience, which would waste materials inevitably. HPBD overcomes the demerits of DCBD, but there are some restrictions to coated surface, as a whole, the uniformity and robustness of boron film are not as good as DCBD. Both DCBD and HPBD show simply operation and low cost, which can meet the demands of general gas detectors and can be popularized in domestic research institutions. (authors)
