Development of AC-MHD synchronous salient pole generator coupled to the Tokamak fusion reactor
Description
In this paper, work will present another stage of results relavant to the design with identification of performance parameters of synchronous MHD-AC generator with salient pole rotor. Structural design of this generator centers on accelerating the exhaust plasma of the fusion reactor through the second portion of the divertor channel by a linear induction accelerator. Non-uniform external magnetic field, stationary in nature, will interact with impinging plasma at the entrance of the cylindrically shaped exhaust chamber of the fusion reactor divertor. The generator rotor is of salient pole model carrying conventional three phase AC winding and turbine modeled blades distributed over the circumferential segments which will impart the required mechanical motion derived from the accelerated divertor plasma. Calculations have been carried out that established solutions for the induced magnetic and electric fields in the non-uniform gap separating the salient pole rotor from the internal walls of the exhaust chamber. Solutions for the direct and quadrature axes reactances as well as the central magnetizing reactance are secured. The two reaction field theory is used to obtain expressions for the steady-state AC output power, electromagnetic torque as well as the accelerating equation involving a compatible torque angle with respect to time. Work of this paper culminated with the establishment of the equivalent circuit of the salient pole AC-MHD synchronous generator and a state of comparison with the conventional generator. Also stability aspects of the AC-MHD synchronous machine is analyzed regarding effects of loading levels on torque angle vs time behavior. Results presented in this paper are a new cornerstone for efficient utilization of the fusion reactor exhaust plasma in the design and operation of AC-MHD machines as practically coupled system to the Tokamak fusion reactor
