N,N-Dialkyl-amides thermal degradation at low temperatures
Description
The N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl) 3,3-dimethylbutanamide (DEHDMBA) thermal degradation seemed to be complex. The thermal degradation study of N,N-dialkyl-amides, which present similar structures to DEHDMBA, has then been necessary. Four compounds are chosen, the N,N-diethylpropionamide (DEP), the N,N-diisopropyl-acetamide (DIPA), the N,N-diethyldodecanamide (DEDD), and the N,N-dimethyl-benzamide (DMB). These N,N-dialkyl-amides heated at 215 deg. C essentially produce acids, ketones, imides, and amides substituted or not. The atmosphere oxygen level is the most influent factor on amides thermolysis. Thus, after one hour under oxygen atmosphere, the amide residual yields are close to 20%. These same yields are included between 60% and 70% after one hour of thermolysis under ambient air. A thermal oxidation mechanism is therefore probably involved. The initial rates of the amides degradation follow second order kinetics under ambient air atmosphere, and zero order kinetics under oxygen atmosphere. Under nitrogen atmosphere, only the DEHDMBA pyrolysis rate is studied and the reaction follows a second order kinetic. The results show that the two carbon long chains N,N-dialkyl-amides are characterized by a similar thermal behaviour. Moreover, a great number of the degradation products appear whatever the atmosphere and the temperature applied. The acids are often final reaction products, like some primary amides and aldehydes. Secondary amides, sometimes partially degraded, are also identified after two or three hours reaction rimes. Finally, imides are generally intermediate reaction products. This separation between final products and by-products allow to establish a schematic reaction pathway of the N,N-dialkyl-amides thermal degradation. (author)

La thermodegradation du N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl) 3,3-dimethylbutanamide (DEHDMBA) est apparue de nature complexe. L'etude de la degradation de quatre N,N-dialkylamides de structures proches de celle du DEHDMBA s'est donc averee necessaire. Il s'agit du N,N-diethylpropionamide (DEP), du N,N-diisopropylacetamide (DIPA), du N,N-diethyldodecanamide (DEDD), et du N,N-dimethylbenzamide (DMB). Lorsqu'ils sont portes a 215 deg. C, ces N,N-dialkylamides generent essentiellement des acides, des cetones, des imides, et des amides substitues ou non. Le taux d'oxygene de l'atmosphere reactionnelle constitue un facteur preponderant pour la thermolyse des amides. Ainsi, apres une heure de reaction sous oxygene, les taux residuels d'amide sont de l'ordre de 20%. Ces memes taux varient entre 60% et 70%, apres une heure de thermolyse sous air ambiant. Un mecanisme d'oxydation thermique n'est donc pas a exclure. Sous air ambiant, les vitesses initiales de degradation des amides suivent un ordre partiel 2. Sous d'oxygene, ces memes vitesses suivent un ordre partiel 0. Enfin, sous azote, seule la pyrolyse du DEHDMBA est etudiee, et elle suit un ordre global 2. Au bilan, quelle que soit l'atmosphere consideree, il apparait que les deux N,N-dialkylamides a longues chaines carbonees ont des comportements thermiques similaires. En outre, la plupart des produits de degradation apparaissent quelles que soient l'atmosphere et la temperature appliquees. Les acides constituent des produits finaux de reaction, comme certains amides primaires legers et aldehydes. Quelques amides secondaires sont egalement presents apres deux ou trois heures de reaction, mais ils sont parfois partiellement degrades. Enfin, les imides constituent generalement des produits de reaction intermediaires. Ainsi, par la separation des produits finaux et des sous-produits de reaction, il devient possible d'etablir un schema reactionnel de la thermodegradation des N,N-dialkylamides. (auteur)Files
