Energy sell-off

This article examines the deregulation of Canada's electricity industry which started with the introduction of competition in Alberta with its unique electricity market only for new generating capacity and not for existing capacity. The splitting up of Ontario Hydro into five companies, the sale of equity stakes in Ontario's laid-up nuclear plant, consolidation of municipal companies, obstacles to the introduction of competition in other provinces such as Quebec, and problems involved in interconnections are discussed.
