In 1985 the Merlewood Research Station of the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology hosted a meeting at Grange-over-Sands, inviting specialist speakers to address a general audience on aspects of pollution problems facing Cumbria, from several viewpoints. Topics discussed were:- acid rain (including papers on acid deposition, run-off effects on waterbodies, and the CEGB view), radionuclide pollution (including terrestrial ecosystems, the international context, the Black Advisory Group), and industrial pollution (including water quality, influence of the Lakes, control measures, waste disposal, plant responses to sulphur dioxide and oxides of nitrogen).
