Technology transfer within the KFA/NUCLEBRAS Cooperative Program 'Thorium utilization in PWRs'

Description

The results of the cooperative R and D program 'Th-Utilization in PWRs' performed by KFA and NUCLEBRAS under participation of KWU and NUKEM are presented. The results show that (Th,U)O2 and (Th,Pu)O2 fuel can be inserted in unchanged fuel assemblies in a standard PWR in both 3 and 4 years cycle. The advanced fuel fabrication process based on pellets pressing provides (Th,U)O2 fuel satisfying PWR specifications. This fuel, under irradiation testing since 1983, shows good irradiation performance in a good agreement with the model predictions. In the field of reprocessing the results on laboratory scale show that PWR thorium fuel can be reprocessed using the known flow sheets. (Author)

Apresenta-se os resultados do programa cooperativo de pesquisa e desenvolvimento 'Utilizacao do Th em PWRs' realizado pela KFA e NUCLEBRAS com participacao da KWU e NUKEM. Os resultados mostram que os combustiveis (Th,U)O2 e (Th,Pu)O2 podem ser inseridos nos conjuntos de combustivel inalterado em um padrao PWR em ciclos de 3 e 4 anos. O processo de fabricacao do combustivel avancado baseado na prensagem de 'pellets' produz combustivel (Th,U)O2 satisfaz especificacao PWR. Este combustivel, sob teste de irradiacao desde 1983 mostra boa performance, em boa concordancia com o modelo previsto. Na area de reprocessamento os resultados em escala laboratorial mostra que o torio combustivel de PWR pode ser reprocessado usando superficies de fluido conhecido. (M.C.K.)
