Long baseline neutrino oscillations and proton decay: the ICARUS project
Description
For more than 20 years, neutrinos have provided physicists with a most intriguing puzzle. The central issue is whether neutrinos have a mass and whether they mix as quarks do. The smallness of the masses likely to be involved requires the study of oscillations over long distances to have a chance to resolve the puzzle. As part of a major experimental effort, ICARUS is concentrating on the neutrino puzzle while at the same time providing a new laboratory for GUT physics through a second generation proton decay search.
