Highly Efficient Surface Ionisation Ion Source for Ultra-Trace Detection of Quantities of Radio Toxic Strontium Isotopes

Description

The aim of the present work was development of a highly efficient surface ionisation ion source for alkaline-earth elements. An ionisation efficiency of strontium up to 60% with a sample of 1017 atoms (≅ 10 mg) and separation time about two hours was reached by means of electron bombardment. The main purpose of this ion source is detection of 107 atoms of 90Sr (7mBg) in the presence of a surplus of up to 1017 stable strontium atoms. The ion source is used in combination with the fast running atom beam recharge system at the RISIKO facility (Mainz, DE). (author). 5 refs.; 6 figs.; 2 tabs
