Description
Hot nuclei have been formed in proton- and 3He-induced reactions at 2 GeV. Sizeable production cross-sections of nuclei with temperatures as high as 5 MeV have been found. The multiplicities of evaporated light particles have been measured and are found in good agreement with what is expected from a statistical model for the deexcitation of these hot target-like nuclei. The binary fission probability has been measured as a function of the associated neutron multiplicity. At most 50% of the reactions induced in a Uranium target do not undergo binary fission for the highest excitation energies. (authors). 13 refs., 6 figs
