From smoke detector to camera lens. Radioactivity in consumer products

Creators

  • 1. Laboratorium voor Stralingsonderzoek, RIVM, Bilthoven (Netherlands)

Description

To a large number of consumer products radioactive materials are added. In some cases the products function by means of ionizing radiation, e.g. in smoke detectors. In other cases radioactive materials are not added because of their radiation, e.g. in gas mantles or camera lenses. Such products can cause a radiation dose in different phases of their service life. In this article the considerations and results of estimates of radiation doses in consumer products are discussed. 4 refs
