A new high pressure phase transition in a zirconium niobium alloy

Description

The β → ω transformation has been observed for the first time in an alloy under application of shock pressure. The existence of this ω phase was established by electron diffraction. The ω phase was found to have a plate shaped morphology. The orientation relationship of this phase was found to be the same as that observed in the case of ω phase forming on thermal treatment of the alloy. The formation of the ω phase has been explained on the basis of involvement of a shear and shuffle of atoms on (112)β planes. (author)
