A micro-mechanical study of grain boundary fracture in neutron-irradiated stainless steels

  • 1. Institute of Nuclear Safety System, Incorporated, Mihama, Fukui (Japan)

Description

Micro-tensile testing was conducted on neutron-irradiated stainless steels obtained from a baffle former bolt (BFB) and a flux thimble tube (FTT) to investigate the reasons for the difference in irradiation assisted stress corrosion cracking behavior between BFBs and FTTs. Micro-bicrystal tensile specimens were fabricated by using focused ion beam (FIB) micro-processing and then tensioned in a vacuum at room temperature in the FIB system. Partial intergranular fracture was confirmed for the 17.3 dpa FTT specimen, while the 18.8 dpa BFB specimen fractured in the matrix. The difference in fracture behavior of these specimens suggested that the grain boundary cohesive strength of the neutron-irradiated FTT might degrade to a lower level than that of the neutron-irradiated BFB.
