Duke Power Company spent fuel storage and transportation experience
Description
With President Jimmy Carter's 1977 deferral of commercial spent fuel reprocessing, Duke Power Company's spent fuel management program inherited a posture of frequent expansion efforts and continuous long-term planning. At the company's Oconee Nuclear Station alone, the two spent fuel pools have seen four reracking operations over a seven-year period. Two other reracking efforts at the McGuire Nuclear Station have taken place more recently. Further spent fuel storage relief for the Oconee Station is being provided from a spent fuel transportation campaign that began in 1981. In more recent years, Duke has undertaken extensive investigations into newer alternatives, such as rod consolidation and dry storage. With the passage of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act in 1982, Duke will apparently continue studying the developing technologies and implementing further expansion programs well into the next decade
