Akeno Giant Air Shower Array
Description
The construction of Akeno Giant Air Shower Array has been under construction since 1987. 111 scintillation detectors and 30 muon detectors will be installed in 100km2 area, and the full operation with all detectors will begin in 1990. This array is sensitive to cosmic ray showers with primary energy above 1017eV. To achieve the exposure of 1000km2yr or more, the operation will be continued at least for 10 years. The physical aim of AGASA project is to clarify the origin and the nature of propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays. The one subset of detectors of AGASA, Akeno 20km2 array, has been in operation since the end of 1984. The results of a study of the energy spectrum and the arrival direction distribution, using the data from the 20km2 array, are presented. (author)
