Rotational bands and band terminations in the very high spin region

Description
Different ways to build angular momentum is discussed in terms of the number of particles in open shells. Comparisons are made between the rare earth region and the sd-shell region. Special emphasis is put on aligned states in the I = 40-50 region of neutron deficient A = 150-160 nuclei. According to calculations within the Nilsson-Strutinsky cranking model, such states are very favoured energetically and can be described as the end points of rotational bands. Some recent high-spin data which might support such an interpretation are discussed. (author)
