Influence of carbide precipitation upon hydrogen fragilization of an AISI 304 steel

Description

The present work deals with austenitic stainless steels for a family of steels that is renowned for its high resistance to hydrogen fragilization. Nevertheless, these steels may suffer hydrogen fragilization under severe working conditions. This fact is strongly dependent on many factors -composition, grain size, other phases present, corrosion sensitivity, etc.-. While there are studies that show how intergranular corrosion is influenced by corrosion sensitivity -mainly due to carbide precipitation in grain boundaries-, there are no reports about the effect of the carbide precipitation itself on hydrogen fragilization for these steels. Abstract (Spanish)

El presente trabajo presenta los aceros inoxidables austeniticos (AIA) -familia de aceros conocida por su buena resistencia a la fragilizacion por hidrogeno (FPH)-. No obstante bajo condiciones severas de uso, estos aceros pueden presentar FPH. Este hecho es muy dependiente de varios factores metalurgicos (composicion, tamano de grano, presencia de otras fases, sensibilizacion a la corrosion, etc.). Si bien hay estudios que muestran como influye la sensibilizacion a la corrosion intergranular (debida a la precipitacion de carburos en borde de grano), no hay estudios en estos aceros que detallen cual es el efecto propio de la precipitacion de carburos en la FPH.
