Panorama 2013 - Air transport and the problem of CO2: ETS mechanisms and bio-jet fuels
Description
Air transport currently accounts for only 2% (∼600 Mt/year) of global CO2 emissions from human activity. Despite this 2% level, this industry is targeted by governments - especially European Union - and initiatives targeting zero growth in carbon from 2020 onwards, and a 50% reduction by 2050. Over and above aircraft technical innovations and the way in which air traffic is organised, the introduction of ETS (Emissions Trading System) mechanisms and the development of bio-jet fuels are the options most commonly cited in discussions on how to achieve that target.
