Three-body versus four-body contributions in α breakup and nucleon knockout from 58Ni

Description
The reactions 58Ni(α,α'p) and 58Ni(α,3He p) were investigated at Esub(α)=172 MeV. The (α,3He) spectrum is governed by a broad breakup peak whereas the (α,α'p) yield shows dominantly nucleon knockout. A sizeable 3He-proton coincidence yield is observed which is interpreted mainly as simultaneous α breakup and nucleon knockout. Probabilities derived for these direct processes do not indicate strong interference effects. (orig.)
