Electrolytic deposition of strontium and lanthanum chloride melts on aluminium molten cathode

Description

A study was made on polarization of liquid aluminium cathode in NaCl-KCl melt containing 0.2-5 mol.% LaCl3 and 1-5 mol.% SrCl2 at 973 K. The values of aluminium corrosion currents and threshold diffusion currents of La3+ and Sr2+ ion discharge were determined. It was shown that selective lanthanum deposition from Na-KCl+5 mol.% LaCl3+5 mol.% SrCl2 melt takes place at -(2.26-2.5)V potentials with 80-89% current efficiency in cells with diaphragm. The codischarge of La3+ and Sr2+ ions proceeds at -(2.8-3.15)V potentials. The possibility of production of Al-La-Sr alloys using both pure aluminium and Al-La alloy as a cathode was shown
