The Chernobyl accident: its causes and its consequences
Description
The Chernobyl reactor accident occurred during the night of April 26th. Its exact causes were only known at the end of the month of August when an international conference, proposed by the Soviets, was held in Vienna. The Chernobyl reactor, which was moderated by graphite and cooled by water, had several weak points. A crew, which was carrying-out tests, cancelled six safety devices, some of which were essential. In these conditions, the reactor went out of control and this led to two explosions and a serious fire. The fire spread to the graphite and a part of the radioactivity in the reactor escaped into the atmosphere. The consequences of this accident which were well controlled by the authorities were serious in the neighbourhood of the reactor: 31 dead, 100 000 people evacuated and contaminated soil. The radioactive cloud resulting from the accident, pushed by the wind, travelled across Europe and provoked worry everywhere. In fact, the risks from such small doses of radioactivity are not significant; an evaluation of such risks is given in this article in comparison with the effects of small doses of chemical products which although they have analogous effects are considered as being inoffensive
Abstract (French)
L'accident de Tchernobyl s'est produit dans la nuit du 26 avril 1986. Les causes exactes n'ont ete connues qu'en fin Aout lors de la reunion a Vienne d'une conference internationale proposee par les sovietiques. Les faiblesses du reacteur tiennent a son principe meme, le moderateur etant en graphite et le fluide de refroidissement etant de l'eau. Une equipe effectuant un test a mis hors service 6 dispositifs de securite essentiels. Dans ces conditions le reacteur devenait non controlable, de la les deux explosions et l'incendie qui a suivi. Le feu s'etendait au graphite et une partie de la radioactivite du reacteur se repandait dans l'atmosphere. Les consequences de l'accident tres bien controlees par les autorites furent serieuses au voisinage du reacteur: 31 morts, 100 000 personnes evacuees et le sol contamine. Le nuage radioactif resultant de l'accident pousse par le vent a traverse l'Europe et provoque partout des inquietudes. En fait, les risques resultant de telles faibles doses de radioactivite ne sont pas significatifs. On a evalue ces risques et compare leurs effets a ceux des faibles doses de produits chimiques qui bien qu'analogues sont consideres comme etant inoffensifsAdditional details
