A theoretical model of the swelling of γ-irradiated epoxy resin

Description

In this study, a theoretical model is developed to describe the swelling in dry epoxy resin under γ-irradiation. Ionising radiation releases hydrogen within the resin, which is either lost through the surface, or accumulates in small pores within the resin. If the gas pressure within these pores rises sufficiently, then the material surrounding the pores deforms plastically, and the resin swells. The threshold stress for plastic deformation is a function of the number of cross-links in the resin, and changes during the irradiation. (author)
