K4Pu(SO4)4: A new chemical assay standard for plutonium

  • 1. B.A.R.C., Bombay (India)

Description

Structural and thermal aspects of alkali metal double sulfates of plutonium have led to the identification of a new chemical assay standard for plutonium. Potassium plutonium(IV) tetrasulfate is obtained by the dehydration of the dihydrate which is isostructural with K4Ce(SO4)4. 2H2O. Dimeric anions [(SO4)3 M (SO4)2 M (SO4)3]8- with none of the water molecules coordinated to the metal atom are present in the dihydrates. K4Pu(SO4)4 has been evaluated for its purity, solubility, stoichiometry and stability for a period of two years. Chemical analyses for plutonium and sulfate and emission spectrographic and mass spectrometric analyses for impurity elements showed that the compound is stoichiometric with the total impurity content much less than 200 ppm
